Justice Party Presidential Candidates Pledges Nuclear Power Plant Shutdown

SEOUL, March 6 (Yonhap) -- A progressive presidential hopeful on Monday vowed to shut down all nuclear power plants in the country by 2040.

Rep. Sim Sang-jung of the minor Justice Party said if elected president, she will push to make South Korea a nuclear-free country.

"Breaking away from nuclear (power plants) is an irreversible demand of the times," Sim said.

To maintain a stable energy supply after the shutdown, the lawmaker said she will push to reduce energy consumption by restructuring the existing utility rate system, including increasing electricity rates for industrial use.

The presidential hopeful also said she will adopt a new environmental tax to fund the switch to renewable energy sources.'
