Anti-Park Group in Saenuri Party Ready to Impeach President
SEOUL, Dec. 6 (Yonhap) -- A group of lawmakers in the ruling Saenuri Party who support President Park Geun-hye's ouster said Tuesday they have completed all preparation for her impeachment, adding the scenario of having her step down voluntarily by April is no longer an option.
The non-Park group in Saenrui has been embroiled in a conflict with Park loyalists, who claim that the president should step down on her own in April and the presidential election should be held in June instead of December.
"After discussions, we have concluded that the people refuse to accept Park's voluntary resignation in April," Rep. Hwang Young-cheul of the group said. "Regardless of Park's announcements, the impeachment is inevitable."
Park said last week she will ask political parties decide her fate no matter what decision in reached.
While the group earlier said it is also open to the option, it later backtracked and announced its members will join the impeachment vote slated for Friday.
The successful passage of the impeachment motion calls for approval from at least 200 lawmakers in the 300-seat National Assembly. If every single opposition and independent lawmaker is to vote for the ouster, the passage still calls for support from at least 28 members from Saenuri.
The dissenters' group said they have secured enough Saenuri member votes to pass the motion, adding it has at least 40 lawmakers, although the figure remains controversial.
